Prestige Meets Lifestyle: The Best Firms to Work for in 2025

Choosing where to begin or advance a legal career is one of the most consequential decisions an attorney will ever make. While prestige is often a top consideration, today’s lawyers are equally focused on work-life balance and long-term compensation. BCG Attorney Search’s new report ranks and compares the Top 25 Best Law Firms to Work For, giving law students, associates, and lateral candidates a data-driven way to evaluate which firms truly deliver the best overall experience.

How the Rankings Were Compiled

The report takes a multi-dimensional approach, analyzing factors far beyond Vault prestige rankings. Using data from Am Law financials, Chambers Associate surveys, NALP diversity metrics, LawCrossing job market trends, and proprietary attorney satisfaction surveys, BCG created a weighted scoring model that rates firms across five key categories:

What
Where

  • Compensation – salary, bonuses, benefits, and long-term earning potential
  • Lifestyle – billable hour expectations, flexibility, vacation usage, and stress levels
  • Prestige – Vault ranking, client roster, deal quality, and alumni outcomes
  • Mentorship & Culture – partner accessibility, diversity efforts, training programs
  • Associate Satisfaction – retention, promotion rates, and survey feedback

The result is a holistic view of which firms provide the best combination of high pay, reasonable hours, professional development, and future opportunities.

Standout Performers in 2025

This year’s list challenges conventional wisdom. O’Melveny & Myers took the top spot with high marks for culture, mentorship, and manageable workloads, proving that a prestigious firm can also offer balance. Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and Latham & Watkins followed closely, scoring especially high for compensation and market reputation.

Firms like Orrick, Cooley, and Perkins Coie stood out for their strong lifestyle scores, making them ideal choices for attorneys seeking sustainability without sacrificing quality work. On the other end, Kirkland & Ellis and Simpson Thacher ranked lower for lifestyle but maintained top prestige and pay rankings, appealing to those seeking high-octane work environments.

Takeaways for Job Seekers

The report underscores an important shift: prestige alone no longer determines the “best” firm. For many attorneys, long-term happiness depends on finding the right balance between professional reputation, financial reward, and personal well-being.

BCG Attorney Search encourages attorneys at all stages of their careers to weigh these factors carefully, using rankings like these to make informed decisions about summer associate placements, lateral moves, and long-term career planning.
