A Michigan based lawyer was sentenced to three years of probations and fined $10,000 for aiding a woman in fraudulently marrying a U.S. citizen so that she could stay in the country.

Namir Daman, of Southfield, Michigan, was sentenced on Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Last year, he pleaded guilty to marriage fraud. He faced up to five years in prison, however, the government requested leniency because he was cooperative with investigators.

Daman’s lawyer said he was helpful to prosecutors in investigating Roy M. Bailey, a former federal immigration official from Detroit. Bailey pleaded guilty to charges of corruption last September.
